Visual Art Program
The fifth grade curriculum explores the question “What is Art?” through the art of various artists and subject matter. The sixth grade curriculum is art-history based exploring the art of a particular cultural group or time period. The courses will include a survey of art techniques in chalk pastel, oil crayon, drawing, clay, fibers, printmaking and mixed media. Students will complete a selection of art projects, participate in classroom discussions and critiques, work on written assignments, and explore the cultural arts through books, magazines, slide presentations and/or videos. Each spring in conjunction with Youth Art Month, sixth grade art students travel to the Fisher Community Center to view the student art show and permanent collection of post-impressionist art work.
Student art projects are often displayed around the school building. During Youth Art Month in March, a select number of student art pieces will be displayed at the Fisher Community Center and at the Historical Center in Des Moines. Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in partnership with Lenihan Intermediate School displays a selected number of student art projects on a rotating basis.
For 5th grade art classes, art reports will be mailed around the end of the third quarter.
For 6th grade art classes, students will receive a letter grade at the end of each semester.
All artwork will be kept in the art room but will eventually be sent home at the end of the year with the student in a portfolio. Ceramic pieces will be sent home when they have been completed and evaluated.
