McKenna Coleman

McKenna Coleman scored a pair of second-half goals, including the tiebreaker with less than three minutes left as the Marshalltown girls’ soccer team tallied a 2-1 win against Waterloo Columbus on Friday at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.

The host Sailors (5-10) took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening half, taking advantage of the wind at their backs.

Marshalltown (11-5) got even on a strong play by Coleman in the 56th minute, playing through the ball on a pass from Alexia Garcia to get past the Columbus goalie for the tying tally.

Coleman found space to fire up a 25-yard shot in the 77th minute, beating the Sailors’ goalkeeper over the top while keeping the shot under the crossbar.

Columbus outshot the Bobcats 18-13, but 13 of Waterloo’s shots came in the wind-aided first half. Esme Chavez Gomez made 11 saves in the match, including seven in the first half.

Marshalltown has won seven of its last eight games heading into Monday’s regular-season finale at home against Des Moines Lincoln. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
