The Marshalltown boys’ soccer team scored the only goal in the first half and withstood Class 3A No. 7 Marion for the remainder, beating the Wolves 1-0 in the regular-season finale on Friday night at Leonard Cole Field.
Aaron Ordaz Zambrano converted a penalty kick to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead that would last the remainder, lifting Marshalltown (5-10) to its third straight win. The goal was the team-leading 13th of the season for Ordaz Zambrano.
Marion (11-4) missed an opportunity to tie in the 72nd minute as a Wolves shot at an empty net hit the post and caromed out.
Marshalltown hosts Mason City (5-10) in the first round of 4A Substate 3 play Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Bobcats beat the Riverhawks 4-0 in their first meeting this season.
