The ninth-ranked Marshalltown girls’ tennis team bowed out in the Class 2A Region 3 semifinals, falling to Dubuque Hempstead 5-0 in Tuesday’s showdown at Iowa City Liberty.

The Mustangs (11-4) were later defeated by Cedar Rapids Washington, 5-2, in the regional finals, as the Warriors (12-6) advanced to the state dual team tournament.

Marshalltown’s milestone season ended with a 14-2 dual record. The Bobcats were unable to claim any sets in their final match, falling in straight sets in each of five singles matches to reach their completion.

Lily Zahnd was the last Bobcat on the court as her No. 5 singles match was still in progress when Dubuque Hempstead reached the necessary fifth win.

Rebekah Downs, Kennedy Feldman, Ava Lucas, Claire Bohan and Halie Hohnstein each were defeated in the Bobcats’ final team contest of the season.

Downs and Feldman have the state doubles tournament still upcoming, as the Bobcats’ top duo will compete May 24-25 at Johnston High School.
