A balanced Marshalltown boys golf team finished out in the middle of the pack at a 16-team Fort Dodge Invite on Tuesday at Fort Dodge Country Club.
The Bobcats shot 315 as a team to finish in eighth. Dallas Center-Grimes shot a 287 as team champion with Waukee Northwest runners-up at 290.
Ty Faltys and Joe Greazel both shot rounds of 78 to lead MHS, Eli Polley carded a 79 and Jacob Seberger was the last counting score with a career-best round of 80. Adam Boone and Parker Christen weren’t far off with an 81 and 88, respectively.
“I’m pleased with our balance in scoring where we’re not just relying on one or two guys to carry the load, but instead seeing a true team with a lot of guys who can he our low man on a given day,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said.
The Bobcats handled the front nine well, including an eagle for Eli Polley on No. 6 — no Bobcat shot over 41 strokes on the front, but the back nine was more challenging.
“We played our best golf of the season on the front nine,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said. “The back nine has quite a few holes where penalties can creep in and we took some bad lines off the tees that caused some damage.”
Greazel had the best score on the back nine, shooting 1-over 37 with birdies on the Nos. 11 and 13 par 3s.
Gavin Drake of Dallas-Center Grimes was the meet medalist, winning a 3-way tie with Waukee Northwest’s Blake Cronin and Norwalk’s Ian Lux after all three shot a 2-under-par 69.
Next up for the Bobcats is a Mason City invite on Thursday. The Riverhawks finished 10th in the field at Tuesday’s meet with a 332.
“We’ve had a lot of success up there over the years, but Mason City is an improved team, so we’ll need to play well to beat them on their home course,” Johnson said.
