Marshalltown girls swimming splits with Dodgers and Aquagirls

A versatile Marshalltown girls swimming and diving team was put to the test in the MHS pool on Tuesday.

The Bobcats split a double dual with Fort Dodge and Newton/Colfax-Mingo/Pella; MHS beat Fort Dodge, 54-37, while NCMP won over Marshalltown 55-36 and topped Fort Dodge, 53.5-30.5, in the other head-to-head matchup.

“Tonight was an opportunity for me to move some people around a little bit, see what kind of things we could do,” MHS head coach Angie Nelson said. “These kids are versatile, very well-versed in the different events, we just need to figure out where they’re going to compete the best.”

Adele Beek notched the only event victory in the pool for the Bobcats with a win in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:16.16.

“That was a fun one to watch,” Nelson said. “She’s just gonna get faster and faster, got a great rhythm, a great stroke. Breaststroke is a rhythm stroke and it’s just so fun to watch somebody with that talent and rhythm.”

The Bobcats added runner-up finishes in four swimming events: Emma Case earned silver in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and was part of a runner-up 200 medley relay team along with Drea Ceren, Beek and Libby Meyer. Leia Hernandez contributed a second-place time in the 100 freestyle.

Case in particular had a couple close calls, finishing 56 hundredths of a second behind Addison Van Maanen of NCMP in the 200 free and out-touched at the finish by Kylen Lubensky of Fort Dodge in the 500 free, a difference of four hundredths of a second.

“Fort Dodge has a great program, and the NCMP program has some fantastic girls, so I’m proud of how the girls raced against them,” Nelson said. “We had some races that were pretty outstanding.

“We had some good IMs out of Maisie [Gummert] and Rachel Case, and those are competitors that we can count on to score no matter where we put them in the lineup, they’re just so fun to watch.”

Kate Hauser added a 6-dive score of 257.25 for the Bobcats on Tuesday, diving unopposed aside from teammate Ella DeMonte who scored a 128.35.

“Ella started with us a little bit later, so she hasn’t had as much practice as the rest of the girls and never been a diver before, so very promising,” Nelson said. “And Kate is only going to continue to get better. … She’s just talented, clean, athletic, graceful all at the same time. She’s going to have a big 11-dive list once we get into that championship kind of meet.”

Marshalltown has a rare road meet at Des Moines North next Tuesday and then returns home against Cedar Rapids Washington on Thursday.

“I’ve always moved the kids around a bit, and once we get to October it’s a different story,” Nelson said. “But we have a lot of opportunities in the Alliance to try some things out and see what they can do.”
