MHS wrestlers topple Lincoln, Waterloo West
Marshalltown boys wrestling brawled its way to the top of a home triangular in the Roundhouse on Thursday.
The Bobcats defeated Des Moines Lincoln, 71-6, and Waterloo West, 54-25, to improve to 7-1 in dual competition.
“I was just pleased with the scrappiness of our guys,” MHS head coach Luke Cross said. “I think Waterloo West came in thinking they’d be the scrappy dogs here and we showed that we were going to be the scrappers here tonight.”
MHS won all but one match against the Railsplitters. Carson Wright, Dalton Zednichek, Johan Gomez, Nicholas Million, Lucas Bantz and Colby Cross collected wins by fall; Xayvion Anderson won a 16-4 major decision and Jaxson Hinkle was a 17-4 major winner, while Kager Kremer claimed a 16-15 decision to start the dual. The Bobcats also earned four forfeit victories.
The lone loss for the Bobcats came at 215 pounds as last year’s state qualifier Lance Clark took down JJ Schoenfelder with a pinfall in the third period.
“I was impressed with JJ there against a state qualifier,” Cross said. “I think you’ll see a whole different JJ by the time we get to districts.
“Million was wrestling a senior at 106 that you don’t see very often and he stayed in good position and was able to pull him over and get the pin when the other kid got a little high on him. That was like an exclamation point on that dual.”
The West Wahawks only gave up one weight to the Bobcats with Xayvion Anderson’s forfeit win at 165 to kick off the dual, but Marshalltown handled the head-to-heads well with eight pins. Zednichek, Gomez, Million, Bantz and Carson Wright added a second pin to their Thursday resume, and Ignacio Macias, Ashton Wright and Nicholas Wise got in on the pinning fun too for the bobcats.
“Nacho Macias, he’s always fun to watch,” Cross said. “He’s a fireball of energy and you never really know what to expect and when you see a heavyweight pick another heavyweight off the mat, that’s cool to see. Ashton at 113 stayed alive in a match and eventually proved himself to be dominant, that was a good one for him.”
The Bobcats are looking like a solid squad heading into the 2024 home stretch with two weekend tournaments – this Saturday at Saydel and next Saturday at Pella – left on the schedule before the new year.
“The thing our young guys are getting better at is what I like to call brawling,” Cross said. “We’re not street fighters, obviously, but we’re not afraid of anyone, whether they’re more muscular than we are, we’re in there to brawl them up. … And our bench was there the whole time when in the past we’d have individuals going out into the stands, but it wasn’t that way tonight. We have an intensity that I haven’t seen yet in this team for the last four years, and it’s just a cool culture, I’m enjoying it.”
