WILLIAMSBURG — Two wrestlers went 5-0 to lead the Marshalltown boys’ wrestling team to a runner-up finish at the Williamsburg Duals on Saturday.
Ranked Bobcat wrestlers Nicholas Wise and Xayvion Anderson both posted flawless finishes during the day. Wise was 5-0 with four pins and a forfeit at 144 pounds, while Anderson recorded three pins and two technical falls at 165.
Wise is ranked 12th at 144 by IAwrestle and Anderson is seventh at 165.
Three more Marshalltown wrestlers went 4-1, led by Carson Wright at 157. Wright had three pins to go with a forfeit. Dalton Zednichek, rated ninth at 175, posted two pins and two major decisions. Johan Gomez, ranked eighth, went 4-1 at 190 with two pins and a major decision to go with a forfeit.
Lucas Bantz went 3-1 with two pins and a technical fall at 132, while MHS heavyweights Jaxson Hinkle and Ignacio Macias combined to go 3-2. Hinkle was 1-1 with a pin, and Macias was 2-1 with two pins.
The Bobcats opened the day with a momentous win over Davenport Assumption, beating the Knights 39-38 with four-straight match victories to end the dual. The Bobcats trailed 32-12 before Wise won by fall over Chase Krantz at 144, but Assumption answered with a pin at 150 to take a 38-18 advantage.
Consecutive pins for Wright, Anderson and Zednichek made it a 38-36 deficit for the Bobcats, and Gomez scored an 11-7 decision over Maximus Purdy at 190 to lift Marshalltown to a 39-38 win.
The Bobcats followed up with a win over Pella (57-20), but host Williamsburg rolled MHS 49-26 on its way to a 5-0 day and the tournament title. MHS finished off Center Point-Urbana (60-21) and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union (41-33) to claim second place.
