DES MOINES — The Marshalltown girls’ basketball team eclipsed seven wins for the first time since 2007 by finishing off a season sweep of Des Moines Lincoln with Tuesday’s 45-16 win in Iowa Alliance Conference play.
The Bobcats (8-13) beat Lincoln in their second game of the season, 40-26, and created a greater cap the second time around. The host Railsplitters (6-16) got just two field goals in the rematch and suffered their sixth-straight loss.
Kinsley Bowie matched her season-high with a team-leading 11 points and Frankie Long tallied nine points and 19 rebounds to lead Marshalltown to victory.
“Everyone on the floor stayed locked in, and the result was that we held Lincoln to just two made field goals in the game,” said MHS head coach Brian Murphy. “We never allowed their shooters to get set or in rhythm, and their offense sputtered when they couldn’t get rushed shots outside to drop.”
Ava Signs scored eight points off the bench to lead Lincoln, which was limited to less than half of its season scoring average (34.5).
“Against Ottumwa, we failed to execute our gameplan and never recovered,” Murphy said. “Tonight, we executed exactly as scripted and the results reflected it.”
Morgan Hilderbrand added eight points, Amairra Johnson scored six points, and Jorja Janssen finished with five points and four steals. The Bobcats also blocked 11 shots as a team, including three each for Long, Janssen and Millie Heitmann.
Ellie Hughes pitched in with two points and 10 rebounds, while Heitmann had four points.
Marshalltown wraps up the regular season with Friday’s home game against Des Moines East.
