Briana Riddle

National Special Education Day, observed on December 2, serves as a powerful reminder of our enduring commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students. This day celebrates the progress made in special education while honoring the dedication of educators, families, and advocates who work tirelessly to ensure every child has access to the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of inclusion, understanding, and the collective effort required to create a school community where every student can thrive.

In honor of National Special Education Day, the Marshalltown Community School District is spotlighting several of our Special Education teachers and the invaluable work they do. Briana Riddle, a special education teacher at Franklin Elementary School, is one of many dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to support students with special education needs. This day serves as a reminder of their commitment and the difference they make in our school community.

What inspired you to pursue a career in special education?

I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but didn't always know what area. It took a push (and being thrown in) to realize that working in special education is something I can do, and do well. This is a career that is challenging at times, yet so rewarding, and I find so much joy in the 'a-ha' moments each day.

What makes Marshalltown’s approach to special education unique?

I never feel like I am in this alone. I am in a building with so much support; whether it be my fellow teachers, admin, other specialists, and of course our (amazing) paraeducators. There are also resources the district provides us with that we are encouraged to utilize if needed.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a special education teacher?

Making connections with the students and supporting them, even through their toughest moments; being there when they have those breakthrough moments and celebrating with them.

What does it mean to you to Embrace The Lead?

Taking pride in my work each day; representing and being a part of district that wants all students to succeed.
