The Marshalltown Community School District is proud to announce that Marshalltown High School has been selected as the 2024 School District of the Year by the National Hispanic Institute (NHI), a prestigious organization dedicated to developing young Latino leaders.
The award recognizes Marshalltown High School's outstanding commitment to leadership development through its partnership with NHI's summer programs, including the Great Debate, Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session, and Collegiate World Series. These programs offer students comprehensive experiences in public speaking, policy development, and college preparation.
Particularly noteworthy is the school's establishment of an active NHI club that engages in recruitment, fundraising, and original cultural and leadership programming both within the school and the broader Marshalltown community.
"This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to providing transformative opportunities for our students," said Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte. "Our partnership with NHI has empowered our students to develop essential leadership skills, forge meaningful connections, and envision broader horizons for their futures. The impact of these programs extends beyond individual student success to strengthen our entire community, and we're honored to receive this distinction."
"This award is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of our students and staff," said MHS Associate Principal and NHI advisor Hector Campos. "Through our partnership with the National Hispanic Institute, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative these experiences are for our students. They return from programs like the Great Debate, the Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session and the College World Series inspired, confident, and equipped to make a difference in our school and community. It’s an honor to see their efforts recognized on a national level."
Since 1979, NHI has worked with over 100,000 alumni nationwide and internationally, fostering leaders who excel both in their careers and community service. Marshalltown High School was specifically commended for consistently sending motivated, engaged, and thoughtful students to NHI leadership programs.
